Communicating with Children, Young People and Families at End of Life where there is a Learning Disability
Asist has worked in collaborative partnership with Keele University to deliver a toolkit for supporting children, young people and families at end of life where there is a learning disability. The project was financed by the Department of Health and endorsed by the West Midlands Paediatric Palliative Care Network. The toolkit itself was developed in association with Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham CAMHS LD and Connected, the National Communication Skills Training Programme.
In order to deliver a sustainable legacy from the project, approval has been given for Asist to sell complete toolkits through a social enterprise with all surpluses being committed to Asist's charitable purpose of supporting people with disabilities and mental health issues. It should be noted that the toolkit contains sensitive materials concerning death, loss and dying, and it is recommende that it be used by appropriately trained and/or qualified staff.
"This Toolkit is an excellent, practical resource that focuses on communication within this sensitive and important area of care" Dr Sue Read, Keele University, Sub-Group Lead.
What's in the Toolkit?
The toolkit is designed to be a practical, portable resource and comes in a robust 600 dernier polyester bag which can be wiped down. Within the bag there are a range of materials including:
A polpropylene folder containing a comprehensive range of printed materials providing professionals with best practice guidance, key messages and themes, and sensitively incorporating images created by children in hospice care and generously provided to the project by ???
A fully encapsulated Hospital Communication Handbook as an aid to general communication in a ward environment.
A DVD with contributions from parents, carers and people with a learning disability which will help professionals understand the experience of patients, their carers and families.
A robust, pocket sized case containing a set of plasticised cue cards, a microfibre bag and a pack of dry-wipe pens. The cards display a pictogram on both sides with a suggested meaning on one side. This allows the tool to become personalised for each user, adapting the cards with the dry-wipe pens, and easily wiped clean with the supplied microfibre bag. The toolkit also contains two transparent cross and tick overlay cards to strongly express decisions and emotions and a blank card is provided as a canvas for new ideas. This versatile, hygienic and creative communication tool can be used to build stories, aid decision making and express emotions.
