My Next Patient has a Learning Disability Toolkit
The toolkit for supporting people with learning disabilities was developed through a collaboration between Keele University, Asist, local self advocacy organisations, carers and local health organisations. The project was financed by Shropshire and Staffordshire Locality Workforce Board and NHS West Midlands.
What is the Toolkit for?
For many people, going into hospital may be a frightening experience, as they are often confronted by new environments, unfamiliar people and don't really know what to expect.
For many health professionals, caring for patients with learning disabilities can present new challenges in a busy environment, using unfamiliar methods of communication.
This toolkit provides a range of flexible, accessible and practical tools to support health professionals caring for patients with learning disabilities.
What's in the Toolkit?
The toolkit comes in a disposable bag containing:
- An A3 laminated poster highlighting the main messages of the toolkit
- A folder containing a comprehensive range of printed materials providing professionals with best practice guidance, key messages and themes.
- A fully encapsulated Hospital Communication Handbook as an aid to general communication in a ward environment.
- A DVD with contributions from people with a learning disability, carers and professionals which reinforces the main messages of the toolkit.
- A CD with document templates for the main re-usable documents in the toolkit.
